KAWAII ART
Kawaii (かわいい)—the addictive “CULT of the Super Cute” has its Japanese roots in Lady Murasaki's 11th century novel The Tale of Genji, where it referred to sympathetic and vulnerable qualities. Over time, this evolved to represent an aesthetic defined by THE: cute, adorable, lovable, shy, pretty and most often—fifty shades of PINK (or Tiffany Blue when it’s Breakfast for Two).

“MEMOIRS OF A KITTY” by Sean Danconia.Originally commissioned as a gift for the (former) President of Sanrio (USA)—the very first Danconia “kitty-inspired” mixed-media art piece, “Memoirs of a Kitty” (₌♥ᆽ♥₌) was envisioned as a imaginary 3D-movie-musical, marking the early years of Kitty White’s life in both London and later—Japan.
The pop-surreal sakura-tinted cut-out-collage-style art celebrates her time as a member of the Takarazuka Revue, leading to her fairy-tale romantic involvement with Dear(est) Daniel, and her inveitable evolution into the world’s most iconic “official” un-official official ambassador of captivating kitti-rific kawaii cuteness ฅ(^・ω・^ฅ)!
The art features Kitty-chan in a signature pink kimono, with giant getta—all designed by Yamamoto-San of Tokyo Bridal & Tuxedo (Little Tokyo, Los Angeles) *✧₊✪͡◡ू✪͡, standing at Takarazuka Station, about to board a Kitty-Shinkansen for her new life in Tokyo, flanked by an original array of Hanafuda cards, harkening back to Nintendo’s founding (creator of modern Hanafuda) back in 1889, in addition to show-era Japanese iconography from Ukiyo-E woodblock prints, chiyogami paper and wave elements inspired by Hokusai 葛飾 北斎 himself. “HELLO BIRTHDAY, KITTY PARTY” by Sean Danconia. In the midnight sky, with my third eye,
I saw a Kitty—oh—she could fly.
Through the air, to the moon—this little Kitty had no broom.
Rainbows flowed—from her trail,
Colorfully connected to her tail.
Very cute she was—so fluffy too,
and my heart sang out—”I love you”.
Just then she turned and looked my way,
Which made me feel quite happy and…ga…er…carefree.
But as I replied—“Enchanté”…
I was NOT me—I was Paul Laffoley.

And Miss Feline Fine (aka Kitty Bardot)—hot off her appearance in her kawaii collab Kenneth Anger art film, “And God Created Cat”—arrives at the Balenciaga Boutique, only to discover that it’s…CLOSED? Time-Lord Louis “LaMarchand” Vuitton tricked Cristóbal into opening the Lament Configuration puzzle box all the way back in 1966, leading to the eventual take-over of the brand by the dreaded Cinnabon-Bites—anti-fashion fascist forces from the depths of the basement floor of Takashimaya (right under the iconic TeaBox cafe) (✿◠‿◠)

”I SPY, KITTY EYE"” by Sean Danconia. It’s a Marvelous MOD world as Kitty-Chan is reimagined in a Japanified swingin’ semi-psychedelic Sixties London, cosplaying as retro-fied Brit-Punk lead-singer of “The Hello Sherlocks”, searching for a MOD-est clue to who stole Her Majesty’s favorite poem (The Kitten and the Falling Leaves—which you can read part of on the top right)!
Artistic nods to Italian vespas, London bridge, shinkansen (bullet train), Godzilla (Jo-Zilla), Ultraman-Kitty, British Royalty, Daruma (founder of Zen Buddhism), SupaPup riding Kirin the Giraffe, Badtz Maru in a Mini-Beetle hybrid, Cancelled Cathy (plus other Sanrio-inspired friends) including Sake served by Judy (Mouse) (in Kitty’s Milk Bottle), peppered with a British Breakfast of the iconic MOD symbol(s) + Royal airforce defending London, kimono and chiyogami patterns, classic kitty buttons from the 70s (on her hat), and encapsulated on either side by original Kitty-chan Japanese Hanafuda cards (which Nintendo invented in the 1800’s, used to this day by the Yakuza), and designed especially for this piece. HELLO SPRING, KAWAII DREAM by Sean DanconiaCreated as an ode to the stunning Hoshinoya Onsen, Matsuo Bashu’s Spring Haiku poetry and the 2006 theatrical version of SAKURAN, “Hello Spring, Kawaii Dream” (originally titled “Hello Onsen, Kitty Garden”, 2015) is another Kitty-inspired artwork by Sean Danconia, created as a semi-sequel to “Memoirs Of A Kitty“. (ɔˆз(ˆ⌣ˆc)
The original Mixed-Media canvas painting (visuals pictured) was created in a combination of acrylic paint, photography, illustration, graphic design, archival ink, etc. It had its premiere at Blooming Art Gallery, located at the iconic Japanese Village Plaza in Little Tokyo.
The art features a Hello Kitty-inspired Maiko (geisha-in-training) with Pocky x Sakura-infused Oiran Hair Ornaments + Geta, accompanied by a Japanified gathering of Daruma, Kokeshi, and various Gotochi-Kitty-ish tomodachi (including nods to Japan’s live-action monster flicks), with some SupaPop friends (like Jozilla and SupaPup) in the background, playing in our own (ukiyo-e) great wave of Kanagawa. The sides of the art are adorned with Kitty-rific Hanafuda (flower cards), based on the original styles created by Nintendo in the late 1800’s (used by the Yakuza for their “Game Of Chance” competitions). ٩(◕‿◕。)۶
The new “Kawaii-Cut” version of the art, now titled “Hello Spring, Kawaii Dream” features a beautiful Haiku by Matsuo Basho located at the bottom right hand corner along with honorable mention of the onsen and resort in Kyoto which inspired the piece. There are other subtle improvements but nothing that changes the original structure, coloration and energy of the first edition, which used various line thicknesses, photographic perspective and pastel hues in order to create a vintage 60’s Show-era feel to the art. OLIVE BLOSSOM, CHERRY-FLAVORED ASSASSIN by Sean DanconiaOriginally commissioned on behalf of King Features and launched at HOLD UP ART (Little Tokyo) in 2011, “Olive Blossom” was part of a program aimed at updating Olive Oyl—the iconic love interest of Popeye—with a new energy, style and aesthetic sensibility. The only change requested by King was to cover Olive’s body just a tad and as such, the “cherry flavor” design came into play as the scarf / Qi Pao / Kimono robe was extended across the chest (sparking new ideas). The original “Vanilla” version is also available to see and adorn your naked walls with. d(>_・ )
(Storyline) Picture it. Thimble Theater. Yokohama. 1949. Stationed in the Japans on behalf of the US Navy (post World War 2 era), Popeye (voiced by Robin Williams) falls madly in love ( ̄ε ̄@)♡ with Olive Blossom (Nancy Kwan)—the rebellious Yakuza daughter of a sushi chef (Wimpy-chan) and Hong Kong-born dim sum dumpling master (Mama Lu). While a technical violation of his current orders, Popeye pursues love on the open seas with Olive only to discover that the infamous wasabi-smuggler—Bluto (John Rhys-Davies)—has gotten there first. All seems lost in this Spinach-less land of the rising sun until Popeye discovers that Wasabi contains a similar yet more potent power-up than he could have ever imagined… (っ˘з(˘⌣˘ )

“THE WORLD OF KITTY WONG“ by Sean Danconia
When American artist Dear Daniel (William Holden) first meets beautiful Chinese native, Miss Feline Fine (Nancy “Kitty White” Kwan) aboard a fairy-ferry, she claims to be the chaste and pretty pure daughter of a prominent Hong Kong noodle magnate (who is literally a giant magnet who attracts noodles—don’t ask). (灬♥ω♥灬) But when Daniel spots her again in Hong Kong’s red light district (which is literally just filled with red lanterns for sale), she admits she is actually a…successful red lantern sales-kitten! Naturally. ♡(ŐωŐ人)
As Suzie models for Robert's paintings, their friendship deepens into dim sum and then later jasmine tea and then bubble tea and then ice cream (Hagen Dazz Swiss Chocolate Almond) and then Mexican Coke and then (no and then!)…love, to the disapproval of Robert's British BFFs—Patty (Charlene Tilton) and Jimmy (Kirk Cameron) and his daughter, My Melody (Margaret Cho), who fancies Robert. (∿°○°)∿ ︵ ǝʌol. Believe it to SEE it!
