”MAKO MORI · PACIFIC DREAMS” by Sean Danconia
Created for the official Guillermo Del Toro Art Exhibition at Gallery 1988 (2015), “Mako Mori · Pacific Dreams” explores the anime, manga and science fiction foundations of Del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM film through the characters that inspired it (or might have).
The art features a Fujiko Mine (Lupin the Third) standing in for Mako Mori, adorned with Irezumi tats and a “Cutey Honey” (Go Nagai) inspired body, accentuating all the well-established stereotypes of archetypal anime fantasies.
Some of the icons, iconography, characters and memorabilia showcased in the art: Go Nagai’s Grendizer, Manzinger Z, Gipsy Danger, Godmars, Macross / Robotech, Golgo 13, Toei Studios, Bandai, Hanafuda, vintage Japanese Beer adverts and toy design, etc., sandwiched between a Paul Laffoley x Tadanori Yokoo mandala-ish conceptual visual framework, with a pop-surreal universe emanating out of Ms. Mori’s dreams.
